Selling Your Car During Life Events: Divorce, Inheritance & Moving

9 min read • Updated January 29, 2026

Life changes. Sometimes you need to sell a car quickly during circumstances that make everything more complicated—divorce, death in the family, or an unexpected move. We've helped hundreds of people navigate these situations. Here's what you need to know.

Selling a Car During Divorce in Washington

Divorce is stressful enough without car complications. Here's how to handle vehicle sales during a Washington State divorce:

If You're Still in the Divorce Process:

  • Check your temporary orders — Courts often issue orders about disposing of marital assets. Selling a car without permission could create legal problems.
  • Get written agreement from your spouse — Even if the car is "yours," it may be community property. A simple email agreeing to the sale protects you.
  • Document the sale — Keep records of what the car sold for. This becomes part of asset division.

After the Divorce is Final:

  • Check your divorce decree — It should specify who gets which vehicles.
  • If the car was awarded to you — The divorce decree serves as legal proof of ownership. We can work with this document.
  • If both names are on the title — You may need your ex to sign, OR the divorce decree can override this requirement.

We can help: Call us and explain your situation. We've worked with many divorcing couples and understand the paperwork requirements. We'll tell you exactly what you need.

Inherited a Junk Car? Here's What to Do

Losing a loved one is hard. Dealing with their old car shouldn't add to your burden. Here's how to sell an inherited vehicle in Washington:

If There's a Will (and Probate):

  1. The executor named in the will has authority to sell estate assets
  2. You'll need Letters Testamentary from the probate court
  3. With these letters, you can sign the title on behalf of the estate
  4. We can complete the purchase with these documents

If There's No Will (Intestate):

  1. Someone must be appointed as administrator by the court
  2. They receive Letters of Administration
  3. Same process as above—we can work with these documents

Small Estate Shortcut (Under $100K):

If the total estate value is under $100,000 and 40 days have passed since death, you may be able to use a Small Estate Affidavit instead of full probate. This is much faster and cheaper.

Important: Don't just drive around in the deceased's car hoping to figure it out later. Until the title is properly transferred, you could face insurance and liability issues.

Not sure what you have? Call us with whatever paperwork you have. Death certificate, will, nothing at all—we'll help you figure out the path forward. Many families just want the car gone during a difficult time, and we make that easy.

Moving Out of Bellevue? What to Do With Your Old Car

Relocating for work? Moving out of state? Here's how to handle that old car you can't take with you:

Your Options:

Ship the Car

Cost: $800-1,500+ depending on distance

Makes sense for newer, valuable cars. Doesn't make sense for junk cars—you'll pay more to ship than it's worth.

Sell It Here

Cost: $0 (you GET paid)

For older cars, this is almost always the right choice. Get cash, eliminate the hassle, arrive at your new home fresh.

Moving Timeline Checklist:

  • 2 weeks before: Call us for a quote. Know what you're working with.
  • 1 week before: Schedule pickup for a day before the movers come (or morning of).
  • Day of pickup: Remove personal items, have title ready, cancel insurance after we leave.
  • After sale: Return plates to WA DOL (or take them with you to cancel later).

Moving this week? We do same-day pickup. Call us, even if you're leaving tomorrow. We've helped many people who realized at the last minute they can't take the car.
