How to Avoid Junk Car Buyer Scams in Seattle & Bellevue
7 min read • Updated January 29, 2026
The junk car industry has its share of bad actors. Bait-and-switch pricing, hidden fees, unlicensed buyers who abandon your car—these scams happen every day in Seattle and Bellevue. Here's how to protect yourself.
The 5 Most Common Junk Car Scams
1. The Bait-and-Switch
How it works: They quote you $500 on the phone. When the tow truck arrives, they "inspect" the car and suddenly the price drops to $200. "Take it or leave it—we're already here."
This is the #1 scam in the industry. National lead-generation companies (Peddle, Wheelzy, etc.) are notorious for this because they don't control the tow operators they dispatch.
2. Fake Towing Fees
How it works: They quote you $400, but when they arrive, they deduct $150 for "towing fees" and only pay you $250.
Legitimate junk car buyers NEVER charge for towing. Free pickup is standard. If anyone mentions towing fees, hang up.
3. The Title Grab
How it works: They take your title but give you a check that bounces. Or they say they'll "mail the payment" and you never hear from them again.
ALWAYS get cash or verified payment BEFORE signing over the title. Never release paperwork first.
4. Unlicensed "Buyers"
How it works: An unlicensed individual buys your car but never transfers the title. The car ends up abandoned, impounded, or used in crimes—and YOU'RE still the legal owner.
Only sell to licensed, bonded auto dealers. In Washington, ask for their dealer license number.
5. The No-Show
How it works: They schedule a pickup, you wait all day, and they never show up. Meanwhile, you turned down other offers.
Common with companies that overbook or operate from out of state. Local companies with physical presence are more reliable.
How to Protect Yourself: The Checklist
Before You Call Anyone:
- Google their business name — Look for reviews, complaints, and a physical address
- Check the BBB — Legitimate companies have BBB profiles (even if not accredited)
- Verify they're local — Out-of-state call centers dispatch random towers
- Ask for their dealer license # — Licensed in WA? Ask for proof.
When Getting a Quote:
- Get it in writing — Email or text confirmation of the quoted price
- Ask: "Is this the final price?" — Make them commit before scheduling
- Ask: "Are there any fees?" — Towing, paperwork, processing—all should be free
- Be honest about the car's condition — Accurate descriptions prevent "surprise" deductions
At Pickup:
- Get paid FIRST — Cash in hand before signing any paperwork
- Refuse last-minute price changes — If they try to renegotiate, walk away
- Get a receipt/bill of sale — Documentation that the car was sold
- Remove your plates — Return them to DOL or use on another vehicle
Red Flags: Walk Away If...
Questions to Ask Any Junk Car Buyer
- "Are you a licensed auto dealer in Washington State?" — They should say yes and be able to provide their license number.
- "Is the price you quoted the final price, or can it change at pickup?" — If they hedge, they're planning to lowball you.
- "Are there any fees—towing, paperwork, or otherwise?" — Should be no.
- "Will I get paid in cash at pickup?" — Cash or certified check only. No promises of "mailing payment later."
- "What's your physical business address?" — Legitimate companies have a location you can verify.
